A small part of the arable land consists of onion sets; small onions that are planted and take a relatively short time to grow, so that they can be harvested for consumption earlier. In the first year onion seed is cultivated till a certain size, the onion set. These bulbs are used as planting material for the second year, the second year the onions grow to consumption size. The main advantage of onion sets is that the onions mature earlier the second year. Onion sets are able to grow under poor conditions compared to crops that need to grow from seed. This makes this type of onion breeding ideal in climates with a shorter summer season or a colder climate. Yellow
Sturon: Sturon is seen as the onion set for professional growers. As an onion set it is a longer, the second year the Sturon onion set grows a round bulb, uniform in size and medium maturation.
Stuttgarter Riesen: Stuttgarter Riesen is the most sold onion set in Europe. As an onion set it is round, the second year the bulb is wide and not very high.
Red
Karmen: this red onion set has a medium maturity. The onion is round and has a firm and sturdy skin. The best results are reached when the onion set is treated.
Red Baron: is one of the best known red onion sets. The onion is dark of skin, good storability and uniform and round bulb. The best results are reached when the onion set is treated.
White
South Port White Globe: is a white onion set which is matured medium to early. It becomes a round bulb, the best results are reached when the onion set is prepared. This onion set can also be used as scallion/ spring onion. The best results are reached when the onion set is treated.
Snowball: is also a white onion set and has white flesh with a mild delicate flavour. This great variety is not the best for storing, but perfect for eating fresh. The best results are reached when the onion set is treated.
Pink
Pinkly Talpa: is a pink onion set specially developed. This is our own variety and has an intermediate to early maturation. The best results are reached when the onion set is prepared.
The cultivation of onion sets is completely in our control. The seed for the cultivation is selected by ourselves even as the growers, this way we can cultivate the highest quality. The stock of the onion sets is at our own storage so we constantly check the quality.
